OMR (Optical Mark Recognition)

 

OMR is short for optical mark recognition, the technology of electronically extracting intended data from marked fields, such as checkboxes and fill-infields, on printed forms.  OMR is accomplished by using a hardware device (scanner) that detects a reflection or limited light transmittance on or through piece of paper. OMR software with the help of an imaging scanner is used to scan a printed form and reads predefined positions and records where marks are made on the form. This technology is useful for applications in which large numbers of hand-filled forms need to be processed quickly and with great accuracy, such as surveys, reply cards, questionnaires and ballots. A common OMR application is the use of “PUJAB forms” for registration of students for national exams like PLE, UACE and UCE. The student indicates the categories of identity on the form like the letters in their names by shading the corresponding bubble, and the form is fed through an optical mark reader (also abbreviated as OMR, a device that scans the document and reads the data from the marked fields).  OMR allows for the processing of hundreds or thousands of physical documents per hour. The error rate for OMR technology is less than 1%.

 

 

Field types that are used in OMR

The questionnaires used in data collection come in various types of fields depending on what the user prefers as explained below;

a)      Multiple

This is used where there are several options but only one is chosen. For example, the form might ask for one of the options ABCDE and12345.

b)      Grid

This is field type where the bubbles or lines are set up in a grid format for the user to fill in a phone number, name, and ID number and so on.

c)      Add

This is the field type where the answers are totaled to a single value.

d)     Boolean,

This is a field type where a user answers yes or no to all questions that apply.

e)      Binary

This is a field type where a user answers yes or no to only one question

f)       Dotted lines fields,

This is a field type that allows border dropping like traditional color dropping.
